Preckwinkle Announces Tax Relief Proposal

News & Updatescranetaxlaw.com

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced a proposal today that would waive late fees for taxpayers who pay their 2nd installment property tax bills up to two months after the original due date. The proposal, which still needs to be approved by the Cook County Board of Commissioners, would effectively move the due date for property taxes from August 3rd, 2020 to October 1, 2020.

This proposal mirrors several other surrounding counties which have provided some measure of relief to taxpayers who are facing an incredible burden at the exact time that the COVID-19 pandemic has made paying bills exceptionally difficult for those affected. Multiple elected officials quickly announced their support for the measure, including Assessor Fritz Kaegi, Clerk Karen Yarbrough, and Board of Review Chair Michael Cabonargi.

While this measure provides much needed relief, it also highlights the high level of uncertainty surrounding all aspects of property tax collection in Cook County.
